Red Cloud Chess Tournament Results

Red Cloud Chess Club has hosted an intense, multi-day tournament featuring 16 of the top chess players at Red Cloud High School. Players had to earn a berth into the tournament by placing in the top 16 rank of RPI for the chess regular season, which started in March. Each tournament matchup was a best of three game affair.

Top seeded Social Studies teacher Matt Campbell got upset in the second round by eight seeded Science teacher Tim Barth in a heated face-off of faculty members. On a Saturday afternoon chess matinee, Weizhi edged Jun in an epic series that spanned to four games due to a stalemate. Tyrell similarly edged senior star Tynan in a four game marathon.

The final four featured English teacher Mike Sunderland, Barth, Tyrell, and Weizhi. The faculty members knocked off the students in the final four, despite excellent competition. The championship chess match will pit Barth against Sunderland in a day to be determined.

Graduation Powwow

Tonight, May 13th, is the Graduation Pow-wow at Red Cloud High School.

Gates Millennium Scholars

Letters are still coming in...but eight students so far from Red Cloud High School have been awarded the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship for 2011.......MORE INFO TO COME!!!!!

Sanford Underground Lab Trip

Yesterday Red Cloud High School Journalism students and Science Club members traveled to the Sanford Underground Laboratory in Lead, South Dakota as a part of a partnership between Red Cloud and the Lab.

Journalism students listened to some advice from longtime newsreporter Bill Harlan. Students practiced hands-on skills in photography, interviewing, and note-taking. Students also talked to scientists exploring the murky and mysterious world of dark matter.

The day started off with a fresh blanket of snow covering the Pine Ridge Reservation. However, by the end of the trip, the sun was shining supremely, symbolizing the scientific stardom of skill-seeking students.

2011 Chadron State College Chess Tournament Results

Results are in for the 2011 Chadron State College Chess Tournament. The tournament featured the top 12 bloodthirsty chess minds in the Nebraska/South Dakota area, including five brave teachers from the Red Cloud school system.

OLL math teacher Bryan Steinher finished second in the tournament with a 3-1 record. He had a narrow defeat in a tense championship game. Red Cloud English teacher Mike Sunderland took home the 6th place trophy with a 2-2 record, tying 3rd grade teacher Michael Mallon. Social studies teacher Matt Campbell unfortunately came home trophy-less, as did Science teacher Tim Barth.

Baseball Returns: Phillies Dominate

It snowed last night on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Snow covers the ground this morning and we had a two hour late start at school because of the weather conditions.

Nonetheless, there is one clear sign of spring....BASEBALL IS BACK.

One team made a huge splash in the off-season by signing free agent pitcher Cliff Lee...the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES.

With the vaunted rotation of Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt, Cole Hamels, and Joe Blanton, people are getting hyped up for the Phillies' season. Sports Illustrated featured this dynamic pitching quintet on its cover for its annual season preview.

Last night, Cliff Lee dominated the Jayson Werth-led Nationals by throwing a complete game shutout, striking out 12 hapless Nats. Story from the Philadelphia Inquirer is here.

Right now, the Phillies stand on top of the NL East with a sparkling 9-3 record. Roy Oswalt (2-0) takes the hill tonight against the Marlins and their starting pitcher Javier Vasquez (1-1).

Meanwhile, the Colorado Rockies, led by sluggers Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez, have withstood the loss of ace Ubaldo Jimenez (the rare cuticle injury) to stake 10-2 record and the best record in all of baseball.

In other Philadelphia news, the 76ers face the Miami Heat and their hyped trio of Lebron, DWade, and Bosh in the first round of the NBA playoffs. Do the Sixers and Coach Doug Collins have any chance of winning this series?

Poem of the Day: Billy Collins

Photo of the Day: A window into the fields beyond Red Cloud High School

Poem of the Day, from a fellow graduate from the College of the Holy Cross.

Shoveling Snow with Buddha, by Billy Collins

In the usual iconography of the temple or the local Wok
you would never see him doing such a thing,
tossing the dry snow over a mountain
of his bare, round shoulder,
his hair tied in a knot,
a model of concentration.

Sitting is more his speed, if that is the word
for what he does, or does not do.

Even the season is wrong for him.
In all his manifestations, is it not warm or slightly humid?
Is this not implied by his serene expression,
that smile so wide it wraps itself around the waist of the universe?
But here we are, working our way down the driveway,
one shovelful at a time.

We toss the light powder into the clear air.
We feel the cold mist on our faces.
And with every heave we disappear
and become lost to each other
in these sudden clouds of our own making,
these fountain-bursts of snow.

This is so much better than a sermon in church,
I say out loud, but Buddha keeps on shoveling.
This is the true religion, the religion of snow,
and sunlight and winter geese barking in the sky,
I say, but he is too busy to hear me.

He has thrown himself into shoveling snow
as if it were the purpose of existence,
as if the sign of a perfect life were a clear driveway
you could back the car down easily
and drive off into the vanities of the world
with a broken heater fan and a song on the radio.

All morning long we work side by side,
me with my commentary
and he inside his generous pocket of silence,
until the hour is nearly noon
and the snow is piled high all around us;
then, I hear him speak.

After this, he asks,
can we go inside and play cards?

Certainly, I reply, and I will heat some milk
and bring cups of hot chocolate to the table
while you shuffle the deck.
and our boots stand dripping by the door.

Aaah, says the Buddha, lifting his eyes
and leaning for a moment on his shovel
before he drives the thin blade again
deep into the glittering white snow.
